“Monster in the Closet ” Santa Susana High School Children’s Theater

The Santa Susana High School Children’s Theater group presented the humorous and skillful story “Monster in the Closet.”  Emily has a big problem and every child’s worst nightmare. Not only was she sent to bed just as she reaches the highest level of her video game – but there was a monster in her closet!  It is not just her imagination because her friend Stephanie saw it too.

Teased by her brother and friends, Emily (played by Jessica Trapp and Dayna Scanlon) and Stephanie (played by Tina Tompson) recruit some of their friends to capture the monster.  What they don’t know is that Murray, the Monster in the Closet (Parker Sorensen), only wants to play Emily’s new video game.  Emily and Stephanie’s plan initiates a hysterical series of adventures and misadventures.

The Dream King ( Kyle West and Kyle Kaplan), Toady (Nakita Fazli) and fellow monster Wanda (Corrine Zelada), hearing about his goofing off, had no choice but to keep him on his toes. Every monster knows that when a child is born a monster is assigned to watch over them, not to play with their toys.

The show was a mix of fantasy and reality that follows in the tradition of Monsters Inc.  Emily’s monster problem brought awesome humor, ingenuity and a little magic to this charming and delightful children’s show.

“Funny Girl ” Santa Susana High Musical Theater

The Santa Susana High School Musical Theatre group presented the Broadway hit production of “Funny Girl”. A show based loosely on the biography of Fanny Brice, a successful performer in an era where showgirls are lookers that could dance up a storm. This made the plain-looking, non-dancing Fanny an unlikely candidate for stardom.  Fanny perseveres and ends up working for Florenz Ziegfeld on Broadway, mostly on the recommendation of Nick Arnstein, a slick-talking gentleman gambler. This leads to Fanny’s success as a glorified Ziegfeld Star and her ill-fated marriage with the embezzler Arnstein.

The multi-talented future stars from Santa Susana’s Musical Theater group make a fabulous team. The stars include Leilani Ah Sing (first week) and Meghan Pool (second week) as the enchanting Fanny Brice. The smooth talking Nick Arnstein is played by Tony Castlebury. Eddie Ryan, Fanny’s best friend and Ziegfeld choreographer by Kenny Toll. The rest of the dynamite musical cast will be performing as the dancing Ziegfeld Follies and Rose Brice’s lady poker partners.  The Santa Susana orchestra added a lot of zest to the show. The score is a parade of great tunes, from the thrilling overture to the underrated "The Music That Makes Me Dance." The show is chockfull of memorable songs like "People" and "Don't Rain On My Parade." Dance numbers included "Cornet Man" and "Rat-tat-tat-tat" by the ensemble support cast.

“The Magic Flute” Santa Susana High School Children’s Theater

One of the last works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the Magic Flute, written in 1791. This production was prepared and presented by the Santa Susana High School Children’s Theater. All 3 show played to a sold out overflow crowd. Many viewed the show from the TV studio where it was shown on a widescreen TV. On opening night, the handsome hero Tamino (Parker Sorensen) is on a road trip to rescue Pamina (Lisa Aguilar), the beautiful daughter of the mean and scheming Queen of the Night (Dayna Scanlon).

Pamina is believed held captive by the priest Sarastro (Michael Carlito). Tamino is joined on the trip by Papageno (Kyle West), the bird seller, and Papagena (Jaime Foreman). The plot is complicated by a dragon, a threesome of ladies in service to the Queen of the Night, and another threesome of spirits. The story is lightened by such elements as locked lips, charmed animals, and, of course, a magic flute. The show was a wonderful and creative dramatization.
